Jurisdiction of the Bihar Land Tribunal

The Bihar Land Tribunal has the authority to entertain applications against the final orders passed by the appropriate authorities under the following Acts and Manuals within 90 days of such order, provided that no other appellate or revisional remedy is available under the respective Act or Manual.

  • 02. The Bihar Land Reforms Act, 1950
  • 03. The Bihar Tenancy Act, 1885
  • 04. The Bihar Consolidation of Holdings and Prevention of Fragmentation Act, 1956
  • 05. The Bihar Tenants' Holdings (Maintenance of Records) Act, 1973
  • 06. The Bihar Bhoodan Yagna Act, 1954
  • 07. The Bihar Privileged Persons Homestead Tenancy Act, 1947
  • 08. The Bihar Government Estates Manual, 1953
  • 09. The Bihar Settlement Manual
Jurisdiction extends to the entire State of Bihar.
Qualifications for Appointment
Chairman
  • Must be, or have been, or be qualified to be appointed as a Judge of a High Court.
  • OR must have practiced continuously as an Advocate in any High Court for at least 20 years.
Judicial Member
  • Must have served as a District Judge for at least 3 years.
  • OR must have practiced as an Advocate for at least 15 years.
  • OR be qualified for appointment as a Judge of a High Court.
Administrative Member
  • Must have served as Member/Additional Member, Board of Revenue, Bihar.
  • OR held the rank of Principal Secretary/Secretary to the Government of Bihar.
  • Must possess experience in Land Reforms matters as an Appellate/Revisional Authority.
The Tribunal functions through Benches comprising the Chairman, Judicial Member, and Administrative Member, or as otherwise constituted by the Chairman in accordance with the Act.
