Museums Owned by the Central Government in Bihar
In Bihar, there are four Central Museums administered by the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). These museums preserve
the state's rich archaeological, historical and cultural heritage.
Archaeological Museum, Nalanda
Established in 1917, the Archaeological Museum at Nalanda houses
valuable antiquities excavated from the world-famous Nalanda Mahavihara. The
museum displays stone sculptures, bronze Buddhist images, stucco figures,
inscriptions, royal sealings and archaeological remains from the Gupta and
Pala periods. A number of artefacts collected from Rajgir are also exhibited.
Archaeological Museum, Bodh Gaya
Established in 1956, this museum preserves sculptures and
archaeological remains discovered around Bodh Gaya. Important exhibits include
stone railings from the 2nd century BC, Pala-period sculptures, bronze images
and rare Yakshi figures belonging to the 1st century BC.
Archaeological Museum, Vaishali
The museum was established by the Government of India in
1971 near the ancient Vaishali site. Its collections include
terracotta objects, seals, sealings, coins, beads, bone artefacts, copper
objects, ceramics and sculptures ranging from the Mauryan to the Gupta and
Pala periods.
Archaeological Museum, Vikramshila, Bhagalpur
The proposal for establishing the Vikramshila Site Museum was approved during
the Superintending Archaeologists' Meeting in 2000. The museum
primarily preserves excavated artefacts of the famous Vikramshila University,
most of which belong to the Pala period.
Srikrishna Science Centre, Patna
Established in 1978, the Srikrishna Science Centre was named
after Bihar's first Chief Minister, Dr. Sri Krishna Singh. It
functions under the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture,
Government of India, and promotes scientific awareness among students and the
general public through interactive exhibits and educational programmes.
